If you do just one thing in the first 48 hours after braces or aligners, make it this: keep things gentle and keep things clean. One of my aligner patients loved how “comfortable and easy to manage” the trays felt alongside work, and that comfort lasts when you stick to soft foods, wear your aligners for the hours we set, and clean after every meal. In Lucknow’s humid weather and busy commuting, small habits make a big difference fast.
First 24 to 48 hours: soreness is normal, panic isn’t
“Are braces painful?” is one of the first questions I hear. The honest answer is that pressure and tenderness are common, especially when teeth start moving. Most people describe it as sore, not sharp. Plan your first two days like you’d plan a minor muscle ache. You will feel better when you stop testing your bite and let things settle.
Do this on day 1
- Stick to soft foods. Dal, curd, khichdi, idli, soft roti soaked well, and soups are usually your best friends.
- Use cold packs on the outside of your cheek in short intervals if you feel achy.
- Take OTC pain relief only if it’s appropriate for you and only as directed on the label. If I’ve advised something specific for you, follow that.
- Rinse with lukewarm salt water if your cheeks or lips feel rubbed. It’s simple, and it helps.
For clear aligners, the first 48 hours are where you build your routine. I generally recommend wearing them for the prescribed schedule, which is often 20 to 22 hours a day. Take them out only for meals and drinks other than plain water, rinse before putting them back in, and store them in a case. A surprising number of lost aligners happen when someone wraps trays in a tissue at a café.
For orthodontic braces, avoid biting directly into firm foods. Cut things into small pieces. And please skip sticky and chewy items right now. This is where broken brackets usually start.
Your first week in Lucknow: food, speech, and commute-proof habits
The first week is where people either settle in smoothly or get frustrated. Many of my patients tell me the difference is consistency. The ones who do well keep their plan simple, show up to reviews on time, and don’t “experiment” with risky foods too early. A few aligner patients have even shared that their trays never interfered with daily routine, and that’s exactly what we want for you too.
Eating: when you can eat normally again
“How soon can I eat normally after getting braces?” Usually, once the tenderness settles, you can return to more regular meals. But “normal” changes a bit. With braces, you’ll still need to avoid hard, sticky, and chewy items that can pop brackets or bend wires. With aligners, you can eat your normal foods because trays come out, but you still need to brush before you put them back in. Street-food-heavy evenings in Hazratganj or Gomti Nagar are doable. Just plan for cleaning right after.
Speech with aligners: the “lisp” usually fades
A slight change in speech can happen at the start with clear aligners. Most people adapt within a few days. Reading out loud for 5 to 10 minutes helps. Don’t keep trays out longer to avoid speech changes. That slows your progress and makes the next wear session feel tighter.
Commuter tip: If you’re moving between Alambagh, Charbagh station, and Mandir Marg Sector A area on Amar Shaheed Path, keep a tiny kit in your bag. It saves you from skipping cleaning when the day gets busy.
The small tools that protect braces and aligners (and your gums)
I’m big on simple routines you’ll actually do. In the first week, irritation usually comes from two things: food getting trapped, or trays and brackets rubbing soft tissue. The right tools keep that under control.
My go-to aftercare kit (no fancy products required)
- Soft-bristle toothbrush and a small toothpaste.
- Interdental brushes or floss threaders if you have braces.
- Aligner case if you’re on clear aligners. Not a pocket, not a napkin.
- A small mirror so you can check for trapped food quickly.
- Water bottle. Rinsing right after snacks helps until you can brush.
How I want you to clean clear aligners (without damaging them)
Rinse aligners with cool or lukewarm water when you take them out. Brush your teeth before reinserting. For the trays themselves, use a soft brush and gentle cleaning as advised by my team, and avoid hot water, which can warp plastic. And don’t use abrasive toothpaste on aligners. It can make trays cloudy and easier to stain, especially with tea or coffee.
Loose bracket, cracked aligner, sharp wire: message me sooner, not later
Some things are normal early on: mild soreness, pressure when you bite, and a little rubbing on the cheeks. What I don’t want you to do is “wait it out” when something is clearly broken. If a bracket comes loose, a wire starts poking, or an aligner cracks, reach out. Quick fixes prevent bigger delays.
“In the evening I called him for a query to which he replied in a very friendly manner. I am assured that I am under the treatment of a very good doctor and also a person who will support me in a distress situation.”

Why I’m strict about aftercare (it keeps progress steady)
Orthodontic treatment works when small, repeated steps add up. Patients often tell me they appreciated that I explained the plan clearly, monitored each stage, and kept follow-ups organized. That structure matters even more once you walk out of the clinic. Your brushing habits, food choices, and aligner wear time decide how smoothly things move.
If you’re early in treatment and you want guidance that fits your daily routine, I’m happy to help you set it up. Braces and clear aligners at my clinic start at ₹25000, and the best results come when we protect the basics from day one.
